The Chip Maisey Memorial

Chip Maisey was a long and loyal member of Frilford Heath Golf Club. Sadly, he didn't live long enough to see The VAG play at his beloved club - passing away just two days before the Society arrived on July 10th 2002.

During those three wonderful days that The VAG spent at Frilford, it was decided that a new competition would be created and that this competition would bear the name of the fine old gentleman himself. Furthermore, it was agreed that a trophy would be sought that aptly depicts the image of the great man.

Amazingly, that trophy was found in Surrey just 2 weeks later and, after some difficult and protracted negotiation, it was acquired for the VAG...

After much deliberation, it was decided that as Chip would have appreciated a format that encapsulates the spirit of team play, the Society would play 'as one' against a course. Thus the better ball score across 18 holes was the recorded score, with the trophy being held by The Chair. In fact, this format became so popular that the sea-change in the Society's direction in 2004 can in many ways be attributed to Chip. Team play now dominates the Tour and no one can claim greater credit for that than Mr Maisey himself!

In 2015, the Society visited Frilford Heath once again and it was somewhat fittingly the venue at which the competition bearing Chip’s name was once more adapted. It will come as no surprise to the Society’s legion of loyal followers that this event too has succumbed to the lure of the forgiving Texas Two format! With pairings randomly determined, but of course different to those selected for The Cleek and VAG Texas Two Stableford, a classic Stroke Play round is embarked upon. Once more, the best gross score of the partnerships is registered as the Society attempts to beat par on a scratch basis over 18 holes in order to secure a victory.

Finally, The VAG has considered contacting the family and friends of Chip, to let them know of this fitting tribute, but as with the inception of the Colin Dawes Medallion many years ago, the Society has decided not to bother.
