The Anniversary Goblet (also known as The Tour Crystal Goblet)
Introduced in 2005, The Anniversary Goblet is likely to be known as 'the trophy that jumped the gun'!
A fine crystal goblet was presented by 2005's Chair (who shall remain nameless to save him some embarrassment) at The Compass Inn, close to Bristol in the West of England. The fact that it is crystal is by no means an accident, but reflects the fact that 2005 Chair (kicN Ignle - name anagrammed to again protect his identity) believed the Bristol event to be the 15th Anniversary of the VAG tour, whereas it was in fact the 14th.
His vision, shared by other Society officials, is that the goblet be presented each year to the member playing the most 'memorable' shot on tour.
No-one is quite sure whether the inaugural award goes to Alan Brydon's 'bouncing bomb' effect across the lake on the mighty 15th at The Players Club in June 2005, or whether the award was quietly and sheepishly returned to its box to await its first official outing on the 15th tour. However, the record shows that Alan was presented with The Goblet and that's good enough for us!
Furthermore, it is the intention of the 2005 Chair, that the crystal goblet be superseded by a china version when the tour is 20 years old, a silver one to mark 25 years, and so on. Chair's impromptu and emotional speech reflected his view that the VAG was a bit like a marriage, so he wanted to make this award mirror the fact that wedding anniversaries are marked with materials of a given type in a given year.
